Internet Primer

These days it seems the Internet is everywhere. Every TV ad, every movie, even most billboards these days mention a web site. What is this all about?

Understanding the Internet is a little like the old joke about the blind men and the elephant. Each man touched a different part of the beast so one thought it was a snake, another thought it was a tree, yet another a barn, etc. Depending on what you "grab" the Internet by, it can be understood as:

  • A collection of standards that allow computers to communicate.
  • A history and culture of its own.
  • An internetwork (that is, an interconnection of networks) that connects millions of computers around the world.
  • An incredible resource for finding the products and services you need, getting support, even shopping.
  • An opportunity to cost effectively market your products/services, encourage a loyal following, and increase sales while reducing costs.
  • Note, because there is only one Internet, it should be capitalized when written. Many companies and organizations have set up internal networks that use Internet technologies. These are referred to as intranets. Because there are many intranets, this word should not be capitalized.
